The Castro de Viladonga Museum will host a new “From the Original to the Replica” workshop, an activity that will allow participants to explore the process of recreating a piece of Iron Age castreño pottery from the museum’s collection.
This time, the aim will be to reconstruct a ceramic vessel from the preserved archaeological fragments and its archaeological drawing, following the steps required to interpret the original vessel and reproduce it using traditional modelling techniques.
The selected piece is a truncated-conical bowl, with a slightly everted rim, carinated body, rounded lip and ribbon-shaped handle. It was made by hand using a slow wheel or tournette.
Its decoration consists of incised lines framing rows of impressions made with a comb, forming a zigzag pattern, together with a band of burnished lattice decoration.
Based on its morphology and characteristics, its probable use would have been related to table service.
Throughout the workshop, participants will be able to discover how castreño pottery was designed, made and used, while gaining hands-on experience with the materials and techniques employed in its recreation.
“From the Original to the Replica” offers a practical experience to understand archaeological heritage through hands-on work, bringing us closer to the knowledge and skills of Iron Age potters.

Priority will be given to people who have not previously taken part in this workshop.
